Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy is a common, effective procedure that can save a severely damaged or infected tooth. At Wong Dentistry, Dr. Wong uses modern techniques to make root canal treatment as comfortable as possible.
When Is a Root Canal Needed?
A root canal may be recommended when the pulp (the soft tissue inside your tooth) becomes infected or inflamed. Common causes include:
- Deep decay that has reached the tooth’s nerve
- A cracked or chipped tooth
- Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
- Trauma to the tooth
Symptoms That May Indicate You Need a Root Canal
- Severe toothache or sensitivity to hot/cold
- Darkening of the tooth
- Swelling or tenderness in nearby gums
- A persistent pimple on the gums
The Procedure
Modern root canal treatment is similar to getting a routine filling:
- Diagnosis — Dr. Wong examines the tooth and takes X-rays to assess the extent of infection
- Anesthesia — The area is numbed to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure
- Treatment — The infected pulp is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected
- Restoration — The tooth is sealed and typically restored with a crown for long-term protection
After Treatment
Most patients experience relief from pain immediately after the procedure. With proper care, a tooth treated with a root canal can last a lifetime.
